The Great Depression Improvements
The W.P.A was one of the many programs created by the federal government during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's term in office. W.P.A. stands for Works Progress Administration. The W.P.A movement gave money to schools to hire more teachers and get new books and other necessary supplies. The movement also provided free hot lunches for the children so they would no longer be hungry. The W.P.A. and P.W.A. (Public Works Administration) also helped make new and larger schools to replace one room schools so children would be with their own age group and would be able to learn easier. Having more rooms and more children, the jobs for teachers increased. When World War 2 began there were more jobs for men and women building planes, ships, and weapons. With more people working the economy recovered and gave many people hope and security.
